For anti-smokers, athletic advertisements depicting smoking are infuriating, for a few simple and obvious reasons.
First, they cannot abide a positive portrayal of a smoker. How dare anyone suggest a smoker could be someone to look up to? These depictions go completely against the anti-smoking view that smokers are “abnormal” people to be avoided, and certainly not admired.
The second reason is that athletes smoking flies in the face of the anti-smoking narrative that smokers can’t be athletic because they are less healthy and sub-normal. The problem with this view, obviously, is that smokers can be athletic. They can, and have, outrun and outswam non-smokers. But anti-smokers don’t want anyone knowing this.
